NW1 Green (Go Green!)

www.NW1Green.org

Our exciting new project to transform our playground space.

Supported by Church Street ward councillors, Bryanston and Dorset Square ward councillors, Westminster Community Homes, and Sir Terry Farrell Architects. More details coming soon.

Budget phase 1a: £10k (funding secured)

Timescale: Summer 2015

Budget phase 1b: £10k

Timescale: Summer 2016

Some of the aspects that have been identified:

  • Create something incredible that will enthuse the children and engage the school community in running and maintaining the space.

  • Playground is functional, but lacks imagination.

  • Open fencing does not offer any privacy.

  • Needs more plants and greenery - many of our school kids have limited daily access to green space.

  • Butterfly attracting plants?

  • Sensory and Wild Flower Gardens.

  • More 3-D and vertical play equipment (slides, climbing, and tree-house).

  • Shaded areas.

  • Improved toilets

  • Ecology awareness

  • Playground used more as an outdoor classroom

  • Social impact -space enjoyed by over 500 kids and their families on a daily basis, and could leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

  • Do this against the backdrop of ensuring we retain sufficient play space for other activities and sports.

A vital part of the project would be planting that could possibly help with pollution screening. The playground abuts a busy road that has 8500 cars passing every week. Project cost for phase 1 is budgetted for £10k, and generous donations have been promised from sponsors.
